Excess oil and shininess is usually a key characteristic of oily skin. Prone to blemishes and breakouts, oily skin often looks and feels slick to the touch, and makeup is prone to slipping and sliding. Mattifying skincare products can help, by reducing excess oil production and improving the appearance of pores.
Popular mattifying products include cleansers, toners, moisturisers, masks and even specialist spot treatments. Look out for key astringent ingredients, such as witch hazel or salicylic acid, although take care not to ‘strip’ skin of all its moisture, as it will dry out and rebound with yet more oil production to compensate. Where possible, choose lightweight, oil-free, non-greasy formulations. Clay masks can also help to mattify the look of excess oil.
